Outreach

This student experiences the unusual properties of polymers at a CPS outreach event.

The CPS Program actively participates in outreach programs for youth in grades K-12. We provide age-appropriate experimental exercises relating to colloids and polymers with the purpose of promoting awareness about science and engineering, as well as to encourage talented young people to consider these fields for their future careers.
Currently, CPS provides annual lab sessions for programs including:

  • Math/Science Network-sponsored "Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics"
  • SWE-sponsored "Engineering Your Future" summer program
  • CMU / ICES-sponsored "Moving 4th (grade) Into Engineering"
  • "National Chemistry Week" at the Carnegie Science Center (see below)
  • "C-MITES" courses at Carnegie Mellon
  • Pennsylvania Governor's Institute for Physical Science at Carnegie Mellon for teachers
  • SWE-sponsored "High School Day" for high school girls

and other innovative programs geared for students at schools throughout the Pittsburgh area...

National Chemistry Week

Members of the CPS program are heavily involved in science and chemistry outreach in the Pittsburgh community. National Chemistry Week is one such event where CPS representatives demonstrate the wonders of polymers, materials and goo.
